Bruce D'Ambrosio
A small practice doing one thing: checking what a software business says about itself against what it ships.
Bruce D'Ambrosio is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at Oregon State University, with a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and four decades in artificial intelligence across academic research, defense work and commercial software. He founded CleverSet, which turned NSF-funded research in statistical relational learning into an e-commerce personalization service used by more than seventy retailers, and was acquired by Art Technology Group in 2008. He has done technical due diligence from both sides of that kind of transaction. He is the sole inventor on two issued US patents in probabilistic modelling, co-chaired the Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence, and his current research is on cognitive agent architectures, which is the machinery behind this work.
The practice is built around one idea: that the most useful applications of frontier AI are narrow ones. Not a general assistant that answers anything loosely, but a fixed procedure designed around the models for a single job, run on infrastructure the practice controls, with a person answerable for the result. Claims review is the first such application. Why it is built this way
A claim is a sentence a seller wrote. Whether it is true is a matter of what the code does, and that is a question with an answer, one file at a time. We built a fixed method for asking it the same way every time, and tooling that keeps the record of what was looked at, so the report is checkable line by line and the judgement in it is a person's.
